Carey Cathey Cutting Horses
Carey has been involved in the horse industry all his life. He was raised on the back of a pony turning back cows in his dad’s cutting horse operation and riding the endless forested mountains and grass valleys of beautiful western Oregon. After college his love for the horse and western lifestyle brought him back to the ranch where he started a business starting colts, shoeing horses, and showing cutting horses on the weekends. As the ranch grew so did his responsibilities as he found himself learning the breeding business, managing two stallions and upwards of thirty mares, and helping run 1000 head of feeder cattle with his father. Ultimately, his love for the cutting horse pulled him in that direction as he showed cutting horses for the next 20 years. He has been in all phases of the business: training, showing, breeding, sales, clinics, producing shows, serving as president and board member of various cutting associations.
Horsemanship is dedicated to understanding the profound effect our thoughts, attitudes, and emotions have on our horsemanship. It is a study of equanimity in life through horsemanship. It not only teaches “how to” but also explores the mental aspects of horsemanship.
I believe in a well rounded horse. I like to put a foundation on a horse that creates a soft, willing body and an engaged mind. A horse with a proper foundation can go on to do anything as we have witnessed time and time again as our horses have gone on the excel not only in the cutting pen but also as sorting, penning, roping, barrel, ranch, and western dressage horses.
“To me the most important roll is teacher,” Carey says with a smile when asked what drives him today. “I have devoted my life to learning about the horse, about successful approaches to horsemanship, both mental and physical, and I derive great pleasure from teaching my techniques and philosophy to both horse and rider.”
The relationship between horse and rider when properly experienced can be very enlightening. The horse is unique and very valuable to us in his incredible ability to read us and decipher in us our intents and purposes. This allows us unparalleled opportunities for growth in our own abilities in leadership, communication, equanimity, and most importantly our ability to accept and let go.
